Spring is often a busy time for parents of children involved in youth athletics. Baseball, soccer, teeball and other sports can take up a lot of weekday afternoons and weekends, especially for parents of multiple children who play multiple sports.

If this describes your family or friends’ families, please take a moment to consider why children are given the opportunity to participate in these activities. Healthy habits and experiences, and fun memories can serve to last a lifetime for our youth, who learn the benefits of practicing what they enjoy and being physically fit to attain their goals, and gain experience with good team work and bonding.

Organized youth sports offer a number of teaching opportunities. There is a chance for children to develop good sportsmanship toward their teammates by learning to show encouragement and friendship, and by having a good attitude toward the opposing team before, during and after events.

Adults can set examples for children (who learn from the actions they observe) by showing respect toward all players, coaches, spectators, and– yes – referees.

Youth sports, if done correctly, should lend confidence and inspiration for children to work hard and do their best in everything they do. The right or wrong experience can have a lasting effect on a child. Will you do your part to help ensure a physically and mentally beneficial Spring sports season for all involved?
